Comic-Con 2010: Tom Welling the true star of final ‘Smallville’ panel

Von wlong12, 04:21

With all the superheroes that created buzz yesterday, many fans didn’t forget their favorite small-screen one. They started lining up late last night to get into this morning’s Comic-Con panel for Smallville, and it was bittersweet for many since this is the CW show’s 10th and final season. Fortunately, series star Tom Welling was in attendance and was the star for the thousands who can’t wait to see Welling put on his Superman suit finally on the long-running show. He hadn’t seen the suit yet until a montage piece revealing some exclusive footage showed a clip of the red and blue get-up in a box — which was actually the same one used in the movie Superman Returns. Even sans superhero costume, Welling received much of the queries during the fan Q&A session, including one asking if Clark Kent was ever going to finish college. “Hopefully on the Internet he’ll get his Bachelor’s,” Welling quips. Read below for more news coming out of the Smallville panel.

Comics fans have stuck by the series over the years, and they won’t be disappointed this season. DC Comics writer Geoff Johns, who moderated the panel, says he will be writing an episode during the season that will feature the heroes Booster Gold and Blue Beetle, and current V star Laura Vandervoort will be returning as Supergirl. Producers Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson revealed that there are a bevy of supervillains in store. James Marsters’ Brainiac was shown in a quick tease in the season 10 preview reel, and two members of the Suicide Squad are on tap to appear in addition to a different, Smallville-ian take on the uber-big bad, Darkseid.

A lot of fans are asking for Michael Rosenbaum to come back as Lex Luthor, and the producers want him back, too. Welling shared a story about Rosenbaum’s final day on set while filming the seventh season finale and how he kept talking during his last scene. “He just wouldn’t die,” Welling jokes. “He threatened me that he was going to be at this panel.” (Welling, who’s a producer on Smallville now, will be directing another episode this season, as will co-star Justin Hartley, who plays Green Arrow.)

One other guy who will definitely be returning is John Schneider, whose character Jonathan Kent was killed off a few seasons back. “Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated,” says Schneider, who was a surprise addition to the panel. They didn’t have a card identifying him, so he used his California driver’s license until he realized that his address was being broadcast on the overhead screens. “I guess I’ll be seeing you all for dinner.”

During questions about wearing the trademark Superman duds, producers said that Clark’s outfit will change up a tad from the Matrix-like black costume from last season. And is he ever going to fly? “We all know how the comics turn out,” Peterson says, “so that answers that question.”

Palestinians ready for direct peace talks with Israel: Abbas1

Von wlong12, 04:21

Palestinian-Israeli conflict based on the two-state solution, which entails the creation of an independent and viable Palestinian state on the Palestinian national soil within a region context for peace, the state-run Petra news agency reported.Office 2007 is so powerful.

They also discussed the results of proximity talks that started between the Palestinians and the Israelis in May with a view to create an appropriate environment for the launch of direct peace talks between the Palestinians and the Israelis as soon as possible.

The two leaders underlined the need for effective actions to create the atmosphere that allows for the start of direct peace talks between in line with terms of reference that ensure that these talks lead to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The two leaders stressed on the importance of continued cooperation between the involved parties to ensure realizing a progress in the peace process.

The Jordanian King said his country will continue discussions and work with all regional and international parties involved in the peace process to overcome obstacles that face the peace process currently.

Jordan will also work with other parties to create the appropriate atmosphere for resuming direct Palestinian-Israeli peace talks that address all final status issues in preparation for the two-state solution, which is the sole way for resolving the conflict and attaining peace and stability in the Middle East, according to the King.

The two leaders also underlined the need that Israel halts all its unilateral measures that seek to alter the current situation on the ground, especially the expansion of settlements, demolishing houses, as well as its attempts to evict the Muslim and Christian Arab residents of Jerusalem.

CHAPTER XTHE PHONOGRAPHAT(3)

Von wlong12, 10:35

By drawing this strip beneath a contact lever, thelatter was actuated so as to control the circuits andsend the desired signals over the line. It was observedthat when the strip was moved very rapidlythe vibration of the lever resulted in the productionof an audible note. With these facts before him,Edison reasoned that if the paper strip could be imprintedwith elevations and depressions representativeof sound-waves, they might be caused to actuate adiaphragm so as to reproduce the correspondingsounds. The next step in the line of developmentwas to form the necessary undulations on the strip, and it was then reasoned that original sounds themselvesmight be utilized to form a graphic record byactuating a diaphragm and causing a cutting or indentingpoint carried thereby to vibrate in contactwith a moving surface, so as to cut or indent therecord therein. Strange as it may seem, therefore, and contrary to the general belief, the phonographwas developed backward, the production of the soundsbeing of prior development to the idea of actuallyrecording them.Mr. Edison's own account of the invention of thephonograph is intensely interesting. "I wasexperimenting,"

he says, "on an automatic method ofrecording telegraph messages on a disk of paper laidon a revolving platen, exactly the same as the disktalking-machine of to-day. The platen had a spiralgroove on its surface, like the disk. Over this wasplaced a circular disk of paper; an electromagnetwith the embossing point connected to an armtravelled over the disk; and any signals giventhrough the magnets were embossed on the disk ofpaper. If this disk was removed from the machineand put on a similar machine provided with a contactpoint, the embossed record would cause thesignals to be repeated into another wire. The ordinaryspeed of telegraphic signals is thirty-five toforty words a minute; but with this machine severalhundred words were possible."From my experiments on the telephone I knewof the power of a diaphragm to take up sound vibrations,as I had made a little toy which,

when yourecited loudly in the funnel, would work a pawl connectedto the diaphragm; and this engaging a ratchet-wheel served to give continuous rotation to a pulley. This pulley was connected by a cord to a little papertoy representing a man sawing wood. Hence, if oneshouted: `Mary had a little lamb,' etc., the paperman would start sawing wood. I reached the conclusionthat if I could record the movements of thediaphragm properly, I could cause such record toreproduce the original movements imparted to thediaphragm by the voice, and thus succeed in recordingand reproducing the human voice."Instead of using a disk I designed a little machineusing a cylinder provided with grooves around thesurface. Over this was to be placed tinfoil, whicheasily received and recorded the movements of thediaphragm. A sketch was made, and the piece-workprice, $18, was marked on the sketch.
