With all the superheroes that created buzz yesterday, many fans didn’t forget their favorite small-screen one. They started lining up late last night to get into this morning’s Comic-Con panel for Smallville, and it was bittersweet for many since this is the CW show’s 10th and final season. Fortunately, series star Tom Welling was in attendance and was the star for the thousands who can’t wait to see Welling put on his Superman suit finally on the long-running show. He hadn’t seen the suit yet until a montage piece revealing some exclusive footage showed a clip of the red and blue get-up in a box — which was actually the same one used in the movie Superman Returns. Even sans superhero costume, Welling received much of the queries during the fan Q&A session, including one asking if Clark Kent was ever going to finish college. “Hopefully on the Internet he’ll get his Bachelor’s,” Welling quips. Comics fans have stuck by the series over the years, and they won’t be disappointed this season. DC Comics writer Geoff Johns, who moderated the panel, says he will be writing an episode during the season that will feature the heroes Booster Gold and Blue Beetle, and current V star Laura Vandervoort will be returning as Supergirl. Producers Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson revealed that there are a bevy of supervillains in store. James Marsters’ Brainiac was shown in a quick tease in the season 10 preview reel, and two members of the Suicide Squad are on tap to appear in addition to a different, Smallville-ian take on the uber-big bad, Darkseid.

A lot of fans are asking for Michael Rosenbaum to come back as Lex Luthor, and the producers want him back, too. Welling shared a story about Rosenbaum’s final day on set while filming the seventh season finale and how he kept talking during his last scene. “He just wouldn’t die,” Welling jokes. “He threatened me that he was going to be at this panel.” (Welling, who’s a producer on Smallville now, will be directing another episode this season, as will co-star Justin Hartley, who plays Green Arrow.)

One other guy who will definitely be returning is John Schneider, whose character Jonathan Kent was killed off a few seasons back. “Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated,” says Schneider, who was a surprise addition to the panel. They didn’t have a card identifying him, so he used his California driver’s license until he realized that his address was being broadcast on the overhead screens. “I guess I’ll be seeing you all for dinner.”

During questions about wearing the trademark Superman duds, producers said that Clark’s outfit will change up a tad from the Matrix-like black costume from last season. And is he ever going to fly? “We all know how the comics turn out,” Peterson says, “so that answers that question.”
